This museum in central Amasya is named after Şeyh Hamdullah, a native of the city who is counted among the first figures to have given direction to hüsn-ü hat, the art of fine writing within the Turkish-Islamic tradition, and who is known by the title Reis-ül Hattat, chief of the calligraphers. Examples of the art are displayed here.
The museum does not stop at calligraphy itself. It sets out how writing developed among the Sumerians, the Egyptians, the Hittites and other civilisations, and shows the stages of the crafts that grew up around the written page — bookbinding, marbling and illumination.
