The Alçak Köprü crosses the Yeşilırmak in the centre of Amasya and joins the castle to the districts to the south. It is the only bridge of the Roman period in Amasya and is built entirely of cut stone.
Its name — the low bridge — came about through the river itself: as time passed the bed of the Yeşilırmak silted up and the height of the bridge above the water fell.
In 1865 the governor of Amasya, Ziya Paşa, redesigned the ancient bridge arches as piers and built a wooden bridge on top of them. That wooden bridge was strengthened and renewed with concrete and steel joints after the flooding of the Yeşilırmak in the 1950s, and the bridge was restored in 2009 to the form it has today.
