The hot spring at Kangal, in Sivas province, is known for the small fish that live in its warm water, and it has long drawn people who come for their skin rather than for the scenery. It was designated a nature park by presidential decision, which brought it under the protection of the directorate general for nature conservation and national parks working with the provincial governor's office.
The setting is part of what is being protected. The spring lies in a valley at about 1,600 metres with a microclimate of its own — its moisture balance, the hours of sun it gets and its natural air movement are treated in planning as things to be preserved, both for visitors and for the endemic fish. The protected area runs to roughly seventy thousand square metres.
A large redevelopment is under way on the site, with vehicle traffic to be moved to the outer edge so that the spring area itself becomes a place you walk. While that work continues, some of the existing buildings and the older pools are being kept in service for day visitors, so it is worth checking what is open before making the trip.
