Torul Kalesi is built on sheer rock just east of Torul, right beside the Trabzon–Gümüşhane road, so it is one of the few castles in the province you can see without leaving the car — though it is worth stopping. The walling shows it had an inner and an outer castle, with a watchtower at the highest point of the crag.

The masonry is dressed and rubble stone set in lime mortar, and its colour is that of the rock it stands on, which is why the castle reads as part of the cliff from a distance. Sections of wall survive between roughly three and five metres high, some of them stepped along the top, and enough remains to make out the plan. It was built for defence and for watching the road; some sources say it dates from the Middle Ages and passed to the Ottomans in the reign of Mehmed II.
