The building has been in use since the eighteenth century, and almost every use has left a trace. It began divided: a glazed coffee house and an ironmonger's shop below, a town hotel above. During the War of Independence it served as the headquarters of the Kuva-yi Milliye movement. Afterwards it housed a Türk Ocağı, then from the 1930s a People's House, and when those were closed it became a military club — a casino downstairs, a barber and a tailor upstairs.
Since 2008 it has operated as a registered private museum under the directorate of the Balıkesir Kuvayi Milliye Museum.
The collection is split between the floors. Downstairs is archaeology: material from the city of Adramytteion and from the ancient sites around it. Upstairs is ethnography, drawn from the families of Burhaniye — weapons, Ottoman documents, clothing and photographs, and a first edition of Atatürk's Nutuk in Ottoman script, printed in 1927 and one of the rarer surviving copies.
