The organising idea here is geography, not chronology. More than 200 instruments are sorted into thirteen regions of the world, so what the visitor follows is how musical traditions borrowed from one another across borders.
It opened on 21 August 2021 in Odunluk, Nilüfer, with Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol as project director. Sound matters as much as the objects: a data system lets visitors call up recordings of the instruments they are looking at, so a case is not silent.
A performance space is built into the same plan as the display, used through the year for concerts, exhibitions, talks, workshops and teaching. The museum is open every day except Monday.
