Guide

Patara (Ovagelemiş), on the road between Kaş and Fethiye, is a Specially Protected Environment Area whose beach the Antalya directorate of culture and tourism describes as the widest and longest in Türkiye, stretching up to 800 metres across. The sand runs in front of the ancient city of Patara towards the village of Gelemiş.

It is also a sea turtle nesting beach. Two of the five turtle species of the Mediterranean, the loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), lay their eggs on seventeen stretches of the Antalya coast. At Patara the nesting zone starts east of the mouth of the Eşen Çayı and continues east towards Gelemiş, up to the hills at the eastern end of the sand in front of the ancient city; this part of the shore is made of very fine, clean sand.
