Bandırma's museum was begun by a local museum association, which laid the foundations before the Ministry of Culture and the İstanbul Directorate of Surveys and Monuments took over the work in 1995. It opened on 21 June 2003, became a directorate in its own right in 2008, and in 2010 was given responsibility for everything covered by the cultural heritage law across the Bandırma, Erdek, Gönen, Manyas and Marmara districts — which is why its collection is a regional one rather than a town one.
The building, in the Paskent quarter on a site of about 3,400 square metres, is laid out on a honeycomb plan, with one large and one small exhibition hall on the ground floor and the stores, laboratory and library below.
The display runs from the Early Bronze Age to the early 20th century, and most of what is shown was excavated at two sites: Daskyleion and the ancient city of Kyzikos. The weight of the collection is Persian and Roman. The pieces the museum puts forward are its 5th- and 4th-century BC seal impressions — bullae — a grave stele of the same period, an Attis caryatid, a relief of the Charites, and coins of Kyzikos and of the Persian period.
