Edirne's museum of Turkish and Islamic art occupies the medrese southeast of the Selimiye Mosque, and has done since 1925. The building is the usual medrese arrangement: a main lecture room, students' rooms, and a colonnaded courtyard, with seventeen rooms now given over to display.
The courtyard is where the museum is at its most unusual, and it is worth walking slowly. A yew of monumental size stands in it, among 15th-century gravestones and janissary gravestones -- a type of which very few survive. Around them are inscriptions salvaged from Ottoman buildings, a section on Ottoman water culture, and, from a different world entirely, field kitchens, a gun and cannonballs used in the Balkan War. There is a seating area for visitors in the courtyard as well.
