Murad III had the arasta built by Mimar Davut Ağa to produce income for the Selimiye mosque. It runs 256 metres under seventy-three arches, with 124 shops along its two sides.
Evliya Çelebi records what was sold here: this was the cobblers' market. A prayer dome stands in it, raised for the tradesmen who kept shops along the row.
The provincial directorate adds that at the prayer dome the shopkeepers are known to have sworn each morning that they would trade honestly, and to have prayed there.
