Gazi Mihal Köprüsü carries a road over the Tunca river in Edirne's central district, a historic Ottoman bridge built up in stages over several reigns. The first bridge here was the work of the Byzantine emperor Mihail VIII (1259–1282); early in the 15th century the Ottoman frontier lord Gazi Mihal had it rebuilt, and it took his name.
In 1544 Sultan Süleyman I extended the western end, adding eight more arches to the eight of the original section, and Sultan Mehmed III later added the stretch remembered as the 'middle bridge', a section with two arches.
