Guide

Hüdai's reputation rests on its mud: the spa south of Sandıklı is known above all for its healing mud and the mud baths taken in it. Its story is traced back as far as the Phrygians, and remains of a historic bath from the Byzantine period survive on the site and are worth seeing.

The provincial culture and tourism directorate tells how, in the early Christian era, an archbishop of nearby Hierapolis (Koçhisar) remembered as Sen Mişel treated the sick at this spring, and how old books recorded the cures as his miracles. Because of the spring, Hierapolis came to be known as a holy city, and together with the region's other springs it earned the province the name Phrygia Salutaris, 'healing Phrygia'.

The directorate lists the baths and mud packs, taken under a doctor's supervision, as a complementary treatment for chronic rheumatic and joint conditions and soft-tissue disorders, and for rehabilitation after orthopaedic operations.
