Guide
Ömer Kaplıcası stands beside the Afyonkarahisar–Kütahya highway, 15 km from the centre of Afyonkarahisar and close to the Gecek spa. Nothing is recorded about when its spring first came into use, but the great pool is old: an inscription naming the man who had it built carries the date 1889. A gravestone at the spa credits the discovery to Ömer Dede, a shepherd held to be a saint, who is said to have dug into the ground with his staff and struck water. Evliya Çelebi writes about the spa in the ninth volume of his Seyahatname.
The provincial culture and tourism directorate presents the spa as a place for conditions such as polio, and lists its bathing water as a complementary treatment under a physician's supervision for chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases, chronic back pain, osteoarthritis and soft-tissue complaints such as fibromyalgia, for rehabilitation after orthopaedic or neurological surgery, and for stress-related disorders and sports injuries.
Getting there
