The tomb standing here was built in 1995, in the manner of Ottoman architecture. It belongs to Kara Ahmed Bey, grandfather of Evliya Çelebi — the traveller, scholar, writer and folklorist from Kütahya.
Evliya Çelebi himself recorded where it was: describing his home town on his visit of 1678, he wrote that his grandfather's grave lay next to their house in the Zeryen quarter. That quarter is now called Saray, though the address given on the same page is the Maltepe quarter. Take the number 10 bus from the city centre.
