Guide
The ski area on Murat Dağı lies on the Sarıçiçek plateau at 1,850 metres and has a piste area 600 metres long. The mountain itself rises to 2,312 metres and is known as the highest in the Aegean Region. In antiquity it was called Dindymon, a name meaning the sacred place of the mother goddess Cybele, and from 1313 onwards it came to bear the name of the Turkmen warrior Murat Gazi.
Both hot and cold water emerge on the mountain at 1,450 metres, and its thousands of springs feed the Gediz and Porsuk rivers and the Banaz stream. When the snow melts, crocuses, crown imperials, snowdrops and orchids come into flower, and a flora drawn from three different climates has made the mountain a subject of scientific interest. In summer, picnickers head for the high pastures ringed by tall pines, and the lodgings in the spa area fill up.
