The museum came out of a meeting. After the Historic Towns Association held its 'A City Museum for Every City' gathering in Samsun in May 2011, the project was started; the site, the content and the design were worked out with Prof. Dr. Metin Sözen and the heritage foundation CEKUL, and the buildings were expropriated the same year.
There are two of them, and both belonged to the railway. They were put up in 1928 as offices for the Samsun-Sivas railway construction administration and as state railway staff housing. The building immediately next door, now used as the city memory centre, went up in 1936 and served for many years as the Demirspor club house.
That history is part of the point. The group carries the story of the state railways and of Demirspor, and the celebrations once held in its garden gave it a place in the memory of the town.
Inside, the display is thematic rather than chronological, covering the history, geography, culture, society and economy of the district. The museum is at Cumhuriyet Caddesi No 35 in İlkadım and opens 08:30 to 16:45, from 12:00 on Mondays. There is an admission charge, with a reduced rate for students.
