The Ankara Rahmi M. Koç Museum sits directly opposite the main gate of Ankara castle and opened in 2005. It is the city's first industrial museum, and it occupies two historic buildings: the Çengelhan and the Safranhan.
The Çengelhan was built in the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent and is one of the rare buildings in this quarter to have stayed standing and kept its original character. It also housed the shop Vehbi Koç, founder of Koç Holding, used in his first years in business. Restoration between 2003 and 2005 rebuilt it faithfully, and in April 2005 it opened as a museum under the Rahmi M. Koç Museology and Culture Foundation. The Safranhan, built in 1511, served as a typical Anatolian caravanserai; it was used as a prison in the last years of the Ottoman state and the first years of the Republic, and after restoration lasting until 2016 it opened as an extension of the museum.
The collection runs from small models through steam engines to classic cars. Across 32 rooms it holds more than four thousand objects setting out the history of one industry after another — shipping, road transport, aviation, medicine. The museum is close to the city centre, just above the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, with parking nearby; the address is Necatibey Cad., Depo Sokak No: 1, Altındağ.
