The tower on the shore at Yumurtalık carries the name of Süleyman the Magnificent, in whose reign the district governorate says it was raised; the year, given as 1536, is an estimate rather than a documented date. It was a watchtower, meant to give early warning of an attack from the sea, and its purpose is legible in the building: the shaft rises in stages from a broad base and is pierced only by narrow observation slits. Because it was a military post it is also known as the Armed Ayas Tower.
