The complex was built for Mehmed Çelebi, who is buried in the Green Tomb he raised for himself here. The name comes from the colour of the turquoise İznik tiles on that tomb.
It has a mosque, a tomb, a medrese, a bath and a soup kitchen, and what sets it apart from other complexes is the arrangement: the buildings stand freely rather than being locked into a single scheme.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism frames it as a turning point. Bursa and the Ottoman state had been laid waste after Timur, and with the Green Complex the city recovered — in architecture as much as in cultural and social life.
