The castle stands in the middle of the city and is Seljuk in character. The earliest written record of it dates from 1571; a document of 1577 refers to it as a charitable foundation of Sultan Süleyman. Evliya Çelebi, who came to Çorum in the 16th century, says the castle on the qibla side of the town was a Seljuk work built by Sultan Kılıçarslan.
It is square in plan, built of cut stone and rubble together with stone reused from Roman and Byzantine buildings. There is a tower at each of the four corners and two rectangular projections on every face — three on the north, where the gate is. Inside stand a small mosque and forty-two houses.
