Çorum has been the setting for important civilisations in both prehistory and history, and has cradled one on top of another for thousands of years — which is why traces of them turn up in every part of the province. The region is very rich in ore deposits, and that wealth is the main reason settlement concentrated here in prehistory; a position suited to trade sped the development up.
The Ministry of Culture's own account adds a warning worth keeping. These cultures and civilisations cannot be made to coincide with today's provincial boundaries, or confined inside them, so the ancient history of Çorum has to be thought of as part of a whole rather than cut off from its region.
