The Dede terebinth in the Menemen district of İzmir is among the oldest individually protected trees in the country: the Directorate General of Nature Conservation and National Parks estimates it at 800 years. It is not tall — 9.5 metres — but it is enormous around, with a girth of 8.56 metres and a trunk some 2.72 metres across.
The directorate also records that the branches in the crown have begun to die back, which is worth knowing before you go: this is an old tree in decline, not a specimen in its prime. It was declared a natural monument in 2003, the protected plot is a tenth of a hectare, and the stated capacity is 24 visitors and eight vehicles, with hours of 07:00 to 21:00.
