The mosque was built by Mimar Sinan for Mustafa Paşa, who served as treasurer under Süleyman the Magnificent and Selim II. It has no inscription, so the date of building is not certain.
Evliya Çelebi praised it. Its dome came down in the earthquake of 1752 and was not rebuilt for another hundred and twenty years. The qibla and side faces of the prayer hall are built in alternating courses, with nine windows in three rows on each of those faces.
