The mosque is named for Kadı Bedreddin, who served as judge in Aleppo and in Edirne, and who was the father of Şeyh Çelebi and of Şeyhülislam Şemseddin Ahmet Efendi. He is also known as Bedrettin Mahmud and as Mahmud bin Abdullah.
