Esentepe, north of Gerede, sits at 1,300 m among centuries-old pines, with a hotel that offers winter sports and skiing. It owes its name to Atatürk, who chose it because the wind here blows without pause. The ski runs are on Arkut Dağı, 4 km north of Esentepe, where the provincial directorate reports that international ski races are held every year.
