Guide
Karahayıt, a neighbourhood of Denizli, is known for its red water. The main spring flows in every season at close to 60°C, and around it the water has built travertine terraces in red, green and white, coloured by the metal oxides it carries, across an area of about 500 square metres.
Karahayıt's hotels, apart-hotels and guesthouses use the red water and the thermal mud for treatments. Citing a report by Ege University's institute of hydroclimatology, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism describes the water as rich in minerals and lists bathing for rheumatic disease, sciatica, herniated discs, osteoarthritis, circulatory problems, skin conditions and stiffness after surgery, and drinking for upper digestive complaints and osteoporosis. Mud baths are presented as softening the skin and helping with acne.
