Our compilation for Adıyaman, not an official route. Nemrut is the reason most visitors come: the summit sanctuary with the colossal statues and the tomb of the Commagene king Antiochos I, and below it, above the Kahta stream, Arsameia, the summer seat of the same kingdom. Both lie in Kahta district and belong together in one outing.
One thing about our own listing needs saying. The route carries two separate records here, the archaeological site and the national park that takes in the mountain and the country around it, and our inventory does not settle whether these are two entries for one place or a site and the protected area enclosing it. We have not merged them.
Central Adıyaman holds a group that can be taken together: the Syriac church of Mor Petrus and Mor Paulus, the tomb of Abuzer Gaffari at Ziyaret just outside the city, and Perre, also written Pirin, one of the great cities of Commagene, whose Roman fountain still runs. Before setting out, note what the church's page says plainly — the building was destroyed in the 2023 earthquake and restoration is under way.
The rest pulls the route to opposite corners of the province. Gerger, in the north-east, has the castle set on sheer rock and the maqam of Üzeyir; the Gölbaşı lakes lie west, with walking tracks and bird hides on their shores. Each is a half-day of its own rather than an addition to another. What each place is, and who says so, is on its own page.
