The maqam of Üzeyir is in the Gerger district of Adıyaman, and a mosque has been built in recent years near the place where the tomb is thought to be.
Who he was is disputed in the sources themselves. He is a well-known prophet for the people of Israel and his name appears in the Qur'an, but whether he is a prophet in Islam is a matter on which scholars differ. They differ over the name as well: some hold it to be Arabic, others that it is Hebrew rather than Arabic. In Hebrew the name corresponds to Ezra, and that is how it appears in the Torah in that language.
The name is mentioned directly in the sura of Repentance, and the story connected with him is told in the sura of the Cow: a man passes a ruined and deserted town whose roofs have fallen in on its walls and wonders how God could bring it back to life after its death; he is made to die for a hundred years and then raised, believing at first that he has been there a day or a few hours, and shown that his food and drink have not spoiled while his donkey is bone being clothed again in flesh.
Whether or not he was a prophet, the portal describes him as a man of complete faith who spent his life seeking God's favour and calling those around him to believe and to keep what was commanded. Stones shaped like grains of barley that come out of the ground around the tomb are taken by local people as a sign of his sanctity.
