Gölcük is an artificial lake thirteen kilometres south of the centre of Bolu. It covers 4.5 hectares, measures 1,300 metres around and stands at 1,217 metres. The lake and the ground around it have been declared a nature park and taken under protection. The building on the shore is a state guest house belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
The lake and its surroundings were registered as a recreation ground in 1958. In 2011 the status of the area was changed to that of a nature park and it began to be administered under the national parks law. In 2012 the lake and the ground around it were leased to the Bolu municipality for twenty-two years, and in 2016 the municipal council passed a decision opening the area to building.
Forest of pine, beech, fir and hornbeam surrounds the lake. On the site are a cafeteria, a restaurant, bungalows, a prayer room and a buffet. The road around the lake is used for walking and cycling and is closed to vehicles.
The place draws visitors through the year for rest, for outings, for photography, cycling, picnicking and angling, and it is recorded as receiving about half a million visitors a year.
The lake lies within the climate of the Black Sea. It is reached by fourteen kilometres of surfaced road on the Bolu–Seben route. It is thirteen kilometres from the centre of Bolu, about 250 from İstanbul and about 200 from Ankara. Municipal buses from the centre of Bolu and the minibuses running to the Seben and Kıbrıscık districts serve the lake.
