Demirciönü protects a forest ecosystem at the tenth kilometre of the Akçakoca–Ereğli road from Akçakoca, on the boundary between Düzce and Zonguldak: beech, hornbeam, chestnut and oak forming stands that are pure in places and mixed in others, an example from their optimum range whose natural character has not been spoiled, together with a rich potential of lower flora and fauna.
The area, some four hundred hectares taking in forest compartments 16 to 22 in the Akçakoca district, was registered as a nature conservation area on 12 April 1994. Its boundary was revised in June 2019 to resolve problems arising from private property inside it and to redraw the limits more clearly along natural and man-made lines.

- Across Düzce as a whole, monthly mean temperatures run from 3.8 °C in January to 22.5 °C in July; the mean stays between 15 and 25 °C in May, June, July, August and September; rainfall is heaviest in December (101 mm) and lightest in July (47 mm). Long-term means for 1959-2025 from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM).
