Kayabaşı Nature Park lies within the Akçaabat district of Trabzon, near the Işıklar quarter. The area was declared a type A recreation ground in 1994 and held that status until 11 July 2011, when it was declared a nature park. It is open around the clock.
The park is 48.9 kilometres from the centre of Trabzon and 38.6 from the centre of Akçaabat. Almost the whole of this wide area is under forest, which is what allows so many kinds of animal to live here. Remains of trenches dug during the First World War are found within the park.
Among the plants recorded here are oriental spruce, yellow and purple rhododendron, hellebore, cyclamen, thyme, fuchsia, primrose, crocus, snowdrop, oxeye daisy, mullein, buttercup, dogwood and a range of meadow plants.
The animals recorded include the hedgehog, the common shrew, the blind mole, several bats — horseshoe, whiskered, pipistrelle, barbastelle and free-tailed — along with the hare, the Anatolian squirrel, the snow vole, the short-eared vole, the brown rat, and the wolf, jackal, fox, bear and weasel.
The park holds parking, a prayer room, a buffet, a children's playground and a rain shelter, and there are bungalows for those who wish to stay. Walking, botanical outings, wildlife photography, picnicking and cycling are all possible here.
