The museum is in Ormana, a village in the İbradı district of Antalya, and it exists because of one man who came home. Ahmet Ağa, of the Keleşoğlu family of Ormana, was the last commander of the 56th orta of the Janissary corps; when Mahmud II abolished the corps on 15 June 1826 in the events known as the Vaka-i Hayriye, he returned from İstanbul to his own village.
The name was chosen deliberately. The Ottoman state's first museum was a Janissary Museum on the Sultanahmet square in İstanbul, and it has not survived; the gallery building here was given that name to keep it in use.
The museum was founded by the Ahmet-Zerrin Ellialtıoğlu Foundation. It opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 and is closed on Mondays; admission is charged.
