Kurtkale stands on the Georgian border, one kilometre south of the Kurtkale subdistrict, about 36 kilometres northeast of Çıldır.
The subdistrict takes its name from the castle. Beyond that the provincial directorate records two absences: there is no firm information about the castle's history, and none about where its name comes from. It says nothing about access to the border area.
