The Stone Works Museum at Milas is inside the Ahmet Gazi Medrese, which stands within the Beçin Castle archaeological site -- so a visit here is a visit to Beçin. The medrese was built in 1375 and is the only building at Beçin whose inscription has survived. It was restored, given a new use, and opened as a museum under a government programme of cultural openings across all 81 provinces.
The building is single-storey with an open courtyard and two iwans, and the museum occupies nine rooms, two corridors and the courtyard. Inside the main iwan are two graves: that of the founder, Ahmet Gazi, and one whose occupant is not known.
Thirty-five stone works are on display, divided into the period of the Anatolian principalities and the Ottoman period and arranged chronologically within each. Because the building is a medrese, the museum also uses it to explain what a medrese was: teaching rooms on medrese education and on burial customs hold a further 25 ethnographic objects, and there is a film room, a reconstruction room, and a set of miniature models of medreses from across Anatolia.
