Muğla is pine honey country, and the Beekeeping Museum exists because the people who keep the bees decided the province needed one. It was built and paid for by the Muğla Beekeepers Union out of its own means, as part of the same building as the union offices and meeting hall, and it opened on 5 October 2010.
The union makes a strong claim for the province and it is worth reading as the claim of the people in the trade: that Muğla leads the country in hive numbers, honey production and number of beekeepers, that it is the centre of pine honey, and that nearly all the honey Türkiye exports comes from this region. Beekeeping here is described as a working sector since 1909 and as part of the culture as much as the economy, which is the gap the museum was set up to fill.
It has operated as a licensed private museum since 2012, when the Ministry of Culture and Tourism granted permission and the Muğla Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism confirmed it.
